The Author

“Alan Barnard’s humor, sense of adventure, and the twinkle in his eye shines through in his writing.”
Alan Barnard

Alan Barnard was born and raised in London, England in a world of black and white televisions, and using your imagination instead of electronics.

His career spanned being a telephone engineer, computer technician, instructor, and training designer, taking him all over the globe on business. He emigrated to Africa, then moved to the Persian Gulf before returning to the UK, and then onto the United States. He currently resides in Houston. Texas with his wife.

Alan is an avid reader and prefers plots that make you think right up to the last minute, which is reflected in his writing. His travels, especially around the UK, when combined with his love of the countryside and its history, gives him a unique, down-to-earth way of writing that appeals to all ages.

When he’s not writing, his head is normally deep in books that range from science fiction, through to thrillers and biographies. When asked about his real preferences through, he would say that it’s plots that leave you guessing until the last minute with a twist that leaves you feeling totally blind-sided.

FAQs

Yes. I went through the normal childhood dilemma of wishing I had a different name, often watching TV and films, and thinking about changing my name to match a movie star. For some reason my parents never gave myself or my sister a middle name, which only seems to both people in the US as almost everyone here has middle names!
Yes, my plan is to write a series of three Nature’s Marc books, plus I’m also looking at a travel book plus a series about an ancient magician. Watch this space as they say!
It took a few years as I had to write it around my everyday job and family life. Just when I had time to write, something would happen that side-tracked me. In the end it was a matter of fitting the writing in when I could, plus obviously being in the mood to write!
The basic storyline is around a boy who is a force of Nature, so the first part of the title is obvious. As for the second part, my youngest son is called Marc!
I think that every writer is asked that same question. I think that the ideas come from your imagination, so obviously being raised in an age where laptops and mobile phones didn’t exist forced me to use my imagination a lot more. The hardest part was starting the story, then as I would write my mind took me in different directions. Think of it as doing a puzzle, as one part becomes visible the next part suddenly stands out. So I would write a piece where the boys are being chased and find themselves at a watermill, then in my mind I put myself in their place and thought, what would I do now. Well, I would run inside the watermill and bar the door, and so on. Often my ideas would be far ahead or the point I was writing, so I would make notes.
